The Effect of Elites and Colonization on Literacy∗

چکیده
In this paper we look at the impact of elite class and Japanese colonization on modernizing Korea. Our case study focuses on the historical Korean kingdom known as Joseon, the first monarchial state to be colonized by Japan in 1910. In particular we investigate how pre-existing scholarly traditions and colonial public school provision influenced the overall literacy level in Korea. We introduce novel data from Joseon’s historical court exam archives, colonial education data, and census data going back to 1930. Our main findings suggest that the spread of literacy is mainly explained by the historical presence of educated upper class from the Joseon dynasty, rather than the school system established under the colonial rule. We also find that areas with elite presence had more teachers as well as other types of educational institutions including private and traditional schools. ∗Preliminary draft: comments welcome. †New York University; [email protected] ‡NYU Abu Dhabi; [email protected]

Enhancement in colonization of bovine spermatogonial stem cells following addition of knock-out serum replacement to culture medium
Enrichment of cell suspension with germ cells prior to injection into recipient seminiferous tubules is of importance in spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) transplantation. Knock-out serum replacement (KSR) has been reported to enhance the proliferation of murine SSCs and human embryonic stem cells. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of KSR versus fetal bovine serum (FBS) ...

Introduction: Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) are the foundation of spermatogenesis. New procedure such as sound wave especially low intensity ultrasound (LIUS) can be effective on increasing the number of cells. In this study, the effect of LIUS stimulation on mouse SSCs proliferation and colonization was investigated. Methods: Isolated SSCs from neonatal mice were cultured in DMEM cultur...

Background&Aims: Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) are among the most common nosocomial pathogens worldwide. The intestinal tract provides a major source for transmission of these bacteria. Probiotics are living microorganisms that moderate use of them has inhibitory effect on intestinal colonization by enteric pathogens.
